Grand dome of Hagia Sophia, in Constantinople, now Istanbul, 532-7.
The grand dome of Hagia Sophia, with a diameter of over 101 ft and a height of 160 ft, signified the quintessence of Byzantine architecture, of which main building materials often involved only bricks and stones. It symbolizes the “infinity of the cosmos signified by the Holy Soul to which the church was dedicated” (via), or in other words, the door leading to heaven, hence the construction in favor of natural lights. The dome’s first collapse was in 558, but it was to be reconstructed in 562 to even a greater length.
